Mini Reviews #2

Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan (YALLFest Author)
185 pages

This is the story of Paul, a sophomore at a high school like no other: The cheerleaders ride Harleys, the homecoming queen used to be a guy named Daryl (she now prefers Infinite Darlene and is also the star quarterback), and the gay-straight alliance was formed to help the straight kids learn how to dance.

When Paul meets Noah, he thinks he’s found the one his heart is made for. Until he blows it. The school bookie says the odds are 12-to-1 against him getting Noah back, but Paul’s not giving up without playing his love really loud. His best friend Joni might be drifting away, his other best friend Tony might be dealing with ultra-religious parents, and his ex-boyfriend Kyle might not be going away anytime soon, but sometimes everything needs to fall apart before it can really fit together right.

In this celebration of love in all forms, David Levithan has crafted a world full of engaging and enduring characters that readers will want to visit again and again.”

My Snippet Review:   A quick and delightful read about all sorts of love.  Paul is a protagonist that you instantly connect with.  As you read this story, you feel exactly what he feels.  A great tribute to David Leviathan’s talent as a writer.  This was my first novel that focused on an LGBTQ romantic relationship, and I thought it was beautiful.  Though I must say, the high school setting of this novel is definitely a bit unrealistic in terms of status quo structure (though if you went or go to a high school like this, let me know because I’d love to know there are schools out there that are so open to everything!)

Rating:  Middle Shelf Book (3 out of 5 Stars) (High School)

Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover by Ally Carter (Gallagher Girls #3)
minutes ( pages)

“When Cammie “The Chameleon” Morgan visits her roommate Macey in Boston, she thinks she’s in for an exciting end to her summer break. After all, she’s there to watch Macey’s father accept the nomination for vice president of the United States. But when you go to the world’s best school (for spies), “exciting” and “deadly” are never far apart. Cammie and Macey soon find themselves trapped in a kidnappers’ plot, with only their espionage skills to save them.

As her junior year begins, Cammie can’t shake the memory of what happened in Boston, and even the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women doesn’t feel like the safe haven it once did. Shocking secrets and old flames seem to lurk around every one of the mansion’s corners as Cammie and her friends struggle to answer the questions, Who is after Macey? And how can the Gallagher Girls keep her safe?

Soon Cammie is joining Bex and Liz as Macey’s private security team on the campaign trail. The girls must use their spy training at every turn as the stakes are raised, and Cammie gets closer and closer to the shocking truth.”

My Snippet Review:  This is the turning point in this series, where it turns from fun spy school story to mysterious espionage conspiracy that seems to be centered around the girl who has true Gallagher Girl blood–Macey.  The Circle is after her, and everyone is on protection detail!  But as the gang continues to learn more about the Circle, they begin to learn the truth behind the Circle’s intentions.

The beginning of this one was not as exciting as the first two, but the ending more than makes up for the slow beginning.  This is starting to become one of my favorite series!!

Rating:  Middle Shelf Book (3.5 out of 5 stars) (Middle and High School)
