How I Got This Book: Checked it out from the library

Why I Picked It Up?: Jim Gaffigan is one of my most favorite comedians, period! So when I found out that he had a book coming out, I immediately put the audiobook on hold, because there was NO WAY that I wasn’t going to LISTEN to him read it!

Book Jacket Blurb: “In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald’s, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children—everything from cousins (“celebrities for little kids”) to toddlers’ communication skills (“they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news”), to the eating habits of four year olds (“there is no difference between a four-year old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor”). Reminiscent of Bill Cosby’s Fatherhood, Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.”

Thoughts:

First of all, before we go any further, if you have never heard of Jim Gaffigan, STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING! And click on one or more of the links below. These represent my three favorite comedy sketches of his.

Alright, now that you and Jim have been formally introduced, I can continue with my review. =)

Going into this audio book, the only thing I expected from it was to laugh. A lot. And I did. Because Jim Gaffigan is a man that you just can’t help but love listening to!

I assumed that this book would be about his family, and I am so glad that it was. I love getting to know people on a personal level, and I feel like with this memoir, you get to do just that. And you laugh while you do.

Jim Gaffigan’s life is one big ball of humor, to be honest. I mean, he lives in a small two-bedroom NY apartment with his wife and FIVE young kids. How is that even possible? Jim doesn’t even know 😉 . But really, this memoir is just filled with humorous tales of marriage and parenting and family, and it is just heart-warming. Hearing a man talk about his wife and kids with such tender affection is a breath of fresh air in today’s world. Often, stories revolve around broken and dysfunctional families, so it is just AWESOME to hear about a family that is filled with love and affection toward each other. This just makes my family studies heart very happy.

Essentially, this book is a collection of stories about Jim’s experience before children and after children, and he tells us about the many parenting lessons he has learned thus far. Now, I am not a parent (yet) but I did take A LOT of parenting and family classes in undergrad, so I do have an appreciation (and an interest) in this book. Many of the more negative reviews I have seen about this memoir center around the fact that they are just not interested in the subject matter, not that the book itself is bad.

I will say, the vignettes are written in a very similar style to his comedy sketches, which is why I LOVE them, but others may think it is over done. Which is why I would most definitely recommend the audio version of this book, because Jim Gaffigan reads it in his unique comedic style, and you just can’t help but smile (and occasionally laugh 😉  ).

For sure, if you are looking for a fun memoir to read, either for pleasure or for school, I would definitely recommend picking this one up. And if you are looking for the hippest, newest parenting book, look at this one. It’s a riot!

My Bookshelf Rating:

5shelfA Top Shelf Book!

A parenting book like no other! Jim Gaffigan gives his comedic twist on his experience as a husband and a parent of five. This memoir is a collection of short anecdotes that are sure to keep you laughing (especially if you are familiar with his comedy style) from beginning to end! Gaffigan reads this audio, which just gives it another whole level of entertainment. This is entertaining CLEAN humor that reflects the life experiences of being a parent, told in Gaffigan’s comedic style. A great listen, for sure!

Love and BACON,
Jennifer
